context

무언가의 존재 여부에 대해서 얘기하고 싶을 때, there is(are) ~ 로 표현한다.

어디 어디에 있다는 것이 아니라, 존재여부를 나타낸다.

 

주로 쓰는 패턴

~가 있다/없다; there is(are) / there is(are) no

~가 많다; there is(are) a lot of(many)

~가 많지 않다(별로 없다); there isn't a lot of(many)

이 근처에는 좋은 식당이 없어요

There are no good restaurants nearby.

 

내 방에 큰 창문이 하나 있어요

1. i have a big window in my room.

2. my room has a big window.

3. there is a big window in my room.

위에서는 3번이 사용빈도가 제일 낮다. 왜냐하면, 보통 내 방의 무언가를 얘기할 때, 이는 누군가가 소유하고 있는 개념이거든. 이럴 때는 there is 이런 패턴을 쓰는 게 어색하다.

 

근처에 화장실이 있나요?

Is there a toilet nearby?

 

거기 해물요리 있어?

do they have any seafood?

"Do you have any seafood dishes there?"

 

그 맛집에 대기하는 사람이 별로 없다.

there aren't a lot of people waiting for eating in a good restaurants?

"There aren't many people waiting at that delicious restaurant."

 

내 컴퓨터에 게임 프로그램이 없어.
